Mountains in the Quran
The Quran contains numerous geological references that have only recently been confirmed by modern science. One such example is the description of mountains as pegs that anchor and stabilize the earth. Geologists have discovered that mountains have deep roots that extend far beneath the surface, anchoring them to different plates of the earth and preventing the earth from shaking.
The Quran, in chapter 21 verse 31, states that "We placed within the Earth firmly set mountains, lest it should shift with them." This is an accurate description of the role of mountains in stabilizing the earth. Scientists have also found that mountain roots extend as far as 10 to 15 times their own height. For example, the root of Mount Everest is deeper than 125 kilometers, while its peak stands at nine kilometers.
In chapter 78 verse 7, the Quran also describes the mountains as pegs. This is similar to how a nail or peg holds something in place. The concept of mountains as pegs is an analogy for their function in stabilizing the earth. These scientific discoveries confirm the accuracy of the Quranic description of mountains and their function in stabilizing the earth.
